CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

If you are new to yoga, I understand that it can be a bit overwhelming when trying to decide which is the right class for you.  Whether you plan to take a class with me or attend a class at a local studio, by the end of this post you’ll have a pretty good idea of the kind of class that would suite your needs best!

I know – It can be overwhelming!

INTRODUCTION

Before we get into class descriptions, let’s start with a brief overview of what “VINYASA” means as it is one of the most popular styles of yoga classes offered.

Vinyasa translates to “flowing with breath”.  It is a dynamic style of Hatha yoga which joins physical postures or asanas, with inhales and exhales, creating a steady internal rhythm for the practice.  It can also be defined as breath to movement, or arranging something in a special way.

Studios generally classify Vinyasa classes at three levels:

Level 1: Beginner Friendly

Level 2: Intermediate

Level 3: Advanced

Having said that, let’s dive straight into the class descriptions.

BEGINNERS VINYASA FLOW

The beginners vinyasa class falls under the Level 1 category.  It is for those newer to yoga, or those wanting a basic flow class.  The class introduces foundational yoga postures, teaches you how to breath, and helps you feel more comfortable in the yoga practice.  It will consist of standing, balance, and seated postures.  Clear description of poses and plenty of modification options (including the use of props) will be offered.  The pace of the class will mostly be slow and may also include breathing techniques and meditation.

ALL LEVEL VINYASA FLOW

This vinyasa class is a blend of Level 1 and Level 2 categories.  It is suitable for a beginner (with a consistent practice or some yoga experience), and also for the seasoned practitioner.  During this class, options will be offered for those who would like to find and explore the edge, while simultaneously honoring students who may need more rest in Childs Pose.

ENERGIZING VINYASA FLOW / INTERMEDIATE VINYASA FLOW

This vinyasa class falls under the Level 2 category.  It is very similar in structure to the “All Level Vinyasa Flow”, but is paced a little faster.  It is for those who have a good foundation and understanding of linking breath to movement.  Therefore, it is recommended that you have a consistent and strong yoga practice in order to enjoy the pace of this class.  The class will challenge you with more advanced asanas such as arm balances and inversions.  Be prepared to move and sweat.  The Level 2 practitioner is one who knows how to honor their body’s needs and capabilities, modifying as needed, and knowing when to take rest without being prompted.

ADVANCED VINYASA FLOW

This is a Level 3 class, recommended for those practitioners that already have a strong intermediate practice.  Here you will find more opportunities to explore more complex poses and sequences to challenge the body and mind.  Expect sweaty challenging movements with emphasis to fluidity and fun.

RESTORATIVE YOGA FLOW

Restorative yoga is a relaxing style of yoga intended to be healing and nurturing for the body and can help relieve stress.  The restorative class will revolve around centering of your body – aligning the physical and mental by practicing stillness or gentle movement for extended periods of time.  Props will be used as needed to assist one in holding the poses longer.  This practice is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching.
